Mr. Verdine presents Qur'anic verses understood by the overwhelming consensus of the ulema, Islamic scholars, to be abrogated, cancelled, by the later revelations. The only "context" to these verses comes not from the Qur'an but from the ahadith and sira which reveal the phases of warfare concluding with that of open-ended aggressive warfare only concluding when the entire earth is under Allah's law. Muhammad declared the entire earth to be a mosque. The idea that Islam is about religious freedom is an absurd assertion when every mainstream school of shari'a law mandates death for apostasy, leaving Islam, based on Muhammad saying if a Muslim leaves his religion, kill him. When the only status for non-Muslims under Islamic authority is as subjugated and oppressed dhmmis, should they not consent to convert. The idea that the Verse of the Sword or 9:29 are limited to a certain time and historical place and have no current application is not shared by any authority I can find. What I find is this:

"So at first the fighting was prohibited then it was permitted and after that it was made obligatory ...Allah revealed in Surah 9 the order to discard all obligations (treaties)and commanded the Muslims to fight against all the pagans well as the People of the Book if they do not embrace Islam, till they pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued' "--Dr. M Mushunkhan, Medina Islamic Univ. introduction to Sahih Bukhari.

Islam mandates warfare against disbelievers. The Qur'an teaches believers to commit violence against unbelievers. Q 2:190-193; 9:29; 9:5; 47:4 and a hundred more. A hundred more than the two or three verses of peace and tolerance that are all moderate Muslims trot out to show us and yes, take out of context. Violence with divine sanction comes from the Qur'an and Sunnah. The jihadis and Islamic-shari'a supremacists know that. These are open-ended and universal commands, in no sense limited and historical in context, and consigned to the past. Find Ibn Kathir or Suyuti or Tabari stating that. Nor can they be described as "self defense" to any objective observer.

Perhaps this is why the Encyclopedia of Islam states "the duty of the jihad exists as long as the universal domination of Islam has not been attained..'until the end of the world.' Peace with non-Muslim nations is, therefore, a provisional state of affairs only..." The shari'a manual endorsed by Al-Azhar, 'Umdat al-Salik, say this about Jihad "Jihad means to war against non-Muslims and is etymologically derived from the word 'mujahada' signifying warfare to establish the religion. 1)fighting is prescribed for you (2:216); 2)slay them wherever you find them (4:89); 3)fight the idolaters utterly; and such Hadiths as the one related by Bukhari and Muslim "I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

These verses are all about fighting people because of their beliefs...solely. And the COMPULSION of Islam over them. Convert, die, or be subjugated.

He seems to have missed these verses of Islamic religious tolerance:

"Take not the Jews or Christians for your friends or protectors, they are but friends and protectors to each other. He among you who turns to them for friendship is of them." (5:51) of them means apostate and subject to being killed.

For the unbelievers are open enemies to you." (4:101)

"But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads (22:19);

"Fight the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you" (9:123)

"I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve, smite the necks and smite of them each finger" (8:12). i.e. behead and mutilate them.

"If anyone of you desires a religion other than Islam it will never be accepted of him." (3:85)

"You will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day making friendship with those who oppose and resist Allah and His Messenger, even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers or their kindred." 58:22

This is incitement to hatred, by the way. This hatred has a whole doctrine culled from the Qur'an. It is called Al-Walaa wa al-Baraa (Loyalty & Enmity). This hate and enmity for the sake of Allah is mainstream Islam. Not Islamism. I'm glad if moderates don't follow it but it is orthodox Islam and not Islamism, pretending otherwise is dishonest.
