Awlaki was NOT the leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. While he was alive, Bin Laden himself was reported to have denied an offering by Naser al-Wuhayshi (who is still the leader of AQAP) to make Awlaki the leader last year as his profile grew. Bin Laden reportedly preferred that more experienced leadership remain in place.
