USA v. Kariye, Mohamed
Portland, OR

Al Qaeda

[DOR] Sheikh Mohamed Abdirahman Kariye, imam at the Islamic Center of Portland (Masjid as Sabr) was a founding director of the Global Relief Foundation, a designated al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic charity. Kariye is believed to have fought with the mujahideen against the Soviets in the early 1980s. In May 2003, Kariye was sentenced to five years' probation after pleading guilty to one count of making false statements relating to healthcare matters and misuse of a social security number. Federal prosecutors allege that Kariye likely provided money and support to a group of Portland men convicted of trying to fight U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.
