Britain's largest bank?

If it's Britain's largest bank, why dooes HSBC stand for the "Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation"? It's good news, of course, but I always thought the government entity, The Bank of England (a kind of Federal Reserve regulator) was Britain's "largest bank." HSBC is also an enormous credit card company.
